Frontier Steel Acquires Kinetic K5000 Cutting & Machining Center for Providing Quality Carbon Steel to Marcellus Shale Drilling Customers

January 15, 2014 - Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Pittsburgh, January 15, 2014 -- Frontier Steel, a service center that distributes and processes carbon steel plate, has expanded its processing capabilities by adding an additional Kinetic K5000 Heavy-Duty Combination Plasma/Oxy Fuel Cutting & Machining Center to its shop floor. This new piece of equipment, like the original, gives Frontier the ability to maximize quality and accelerate turnaround time in performing weld prep bevels, stitch cuts, drilling and tapping on all Carbon Grades A516-70, A36, A572-50 and A514. These grades of steel plate are used to manufacture containment tanks, fitting & flange plates, mud mats, components for drilling & flow equipment, truck tanks and other products used in Marcellus Shale drilling operations throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and New York.

The Kinetic K5000 features a 151” x 600” workspace that gives Frontier the ability to perform oxy-fuel burns and hi-def plasma cuts on wider pieces of material and make fewer welds, resulting in quicker turnaround time and superior wear performance. The machine also features a 360” contour plasma bevel, and a machine center complete with a 24-piece automatic tool changer, giving Frontier the ability to drill 4” diameter holes in plate product up to 4” thick with a tapping capability of 1-1/2” diameter. This technology saves customers time and money by providing them with highly processed parts that undergo minimal handling.

“The Kinetic K5000 represents a significant portion of the $1.5 million in capital improvements that we made to our facilities in 2013,” says John Matig, president of Frontier Steel. “Our investment in state-of-the-art equipment solidifies our position as the premier steel service center in the Marcellus Shale region by giving us the ability to provide manufacturers of natural gas drilling equipment and related products with quality carbon steel that delivers superior performance under the harshest operating conditions.”
